Measure Your Table: Step-by-Step

Bergen Linen understands the importance of getting the right fit for your tables. Here is an easy  to get accurate tablecloth measurements:

Step 1: Supplies need. Grab a measuring tape, a sheet of paper, and a pen or pencil to record your measurements. (If you are hosting an event, your venue will allow you to measure. You can also ask the Catering Manager.)

Step 2: Measure for the shape of your table. Is it round, rectangular, or square? This will help you choose the appropriate linen size.

Step 3: Measure the width. For round tables, measure the diameter by finding the distance across the middle of the table. Rectangular or square tables? Measure the width by determining the distance between the two shorter sides.

Step 4: Measure the length. (Round tables, skip this step.) For rectangular or square tables, measure the length by finding the distance between the two longer sides.

Step 5: Note down your measurements. Write down the width and length of your table on the sheet of paper.

Highboy tables will require an additional step. You need the height of cocktail tables to take into consideration. (These typically receive a floor-length drop.)

Tips

Rectangle or Oblong Tablecloth: Measure both the length and width of the tabletop. Longer tables are frequently found in event settings. You will want to visit our drop length section below. However, a drop of 6-12 inches is recommended.

Once you have your desired drop length, add to both the length and width measurements. Then, you will have your ideal tablecloth size!

For an accurate round table’s diameter measurement, make sure to measure from edge to edge of the table surface. Next, consider the desired overhang. It is common to have a 5-10 inch overhang. For a round table, the overhang will be consistent on all sides.

What Are Standard Sizes?

Fortunately and unfortunately, there are a variety of table sizes and shapes available. So choosing the perfect size linen tablecloths can be a daunting task. But fear not! You are in the right place.

Although standard table sizes vary, here are a few common table sizes:

  • Rectangle tablecloth: 6-feet (72 inches) and 8-feet (96 inches) long tablecloths
  • Round: 60 inches or 72 inches in diameter
  • Square: 48 inches by 48 inches. Understanding Table Height

You have your tabletop measurements, but what about the height? Table height plays a role in the overhang decision. We recommend different drops that compliment your unique event. The right overhang can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a table setup and create a cohesive look.

Table height refers to the distance between the floor and the tabletop. Standard table heights fall around 28 to 30 inches. Ex) A 6 to 8 inch drop provides an elegant drape. It also helps prevent accidental tablecloth tugs or spills.

Cocktails tables are taller. They measure approximately 42 to 48 inches tall. Ex) For your casual event, consider a 4 to 6 inch drop.

Of course, there are additional factors that affect your drop of choice including personal preference.

Determining Your Drop Length

Calculating the perfect overhang is essential in achieving the right look.

When thinking of standard sizes, consider the following:

Table shape and size:

Oval or rectangular tablecloth: 12-15 inches drop are standard drop measurements.

Circular tablecloth: 9-12 inches drop is sufficient

Formal settings.

Formal occasion, such as gala dinners or weddings? Choose a floor-length tablecloth for an elegant and sophisticated look. (This extra fabric overhang also works well with centerpieces and other design elements.)

Casual setting? Choose a shorter tablecloth drop hovering above the legs.

Practicality and functionality:

Always consider the practicality and functionality of your tablecloth drop. If you’re hosting a buffet-style event where guests will be seated at the table, a longer drop might get in their way. In such cases, a drop that ends just below the seat level is more advisable. Children at your party? We recommend a shorter drop. This helps in preventing accidents, pulls, or spills.

As you can see, there are a few factors to consider when choosing custom tablecloths for your event. And it all starts with the correct tablecloth size!

Avoiding Common Mistakes People Make Measuring

To ensure the right fit, here are some tips on avoiding common measurement mistakes.

Avoid measuring your table with existing tablecloths still in place. Bulk can distort your actual table dimensions.

Be cautious with irregularly shaped tables. Round tables are measured from the widest point across the table’s diameter. Oval tables have their length and width (at their longest points) measured.

Plan on using a table overlay? Take into account how it will affect the base layer tablecloth size. Ensure that the overlay complements rather than overwhelms the main tablecloth. It is also important to your centerpieces or other table decorations. They can also impact your tablecloth size choice. For example, formal centerpieces look best with a longer drop.
